| PERUGIA AND ASSISI | FIDE27 | ||
|
A tour in the green Umbria region, with its hills and slopes covered with olive groves, pines and grapevines and its eternally fascinating cities. Perugia has one of the most beautiful squares in Europe in which it is possible to admire the Maggiore Fountain, the gothic Basilica of San Lorenzo and the Palazzo dei Priori, home to the Town Hall. Perugia is also home to the famous Perugina chocolate factory and often hosts chocolate festivals where chocolate is sculpted by artists in the streets who then throw the left-overs to the crowds. The excursion continues to Assisi, famous all over the world for being the native town of Saint Francis. Little, winding, stone-paved streets, lined with old houses, lead from the base of the town to the various monuments. In the main square, Piazza del Comune, you'll find the remains of the Temple of Minerva, an example of Roman architecture dating from the 1st century AD and now the Church of Santa Maria della Minerva. For art-lovers a visit to the Basilica of Saint Francis is a must, two 13th century churches one on top of the other, frescoed by Giotto and Cimabue; the Basilica of Santa Chiara, the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Assisi is not only full of nuns and monks but also local artisans intent on their crafts, so you will have time to wander around the shops and discover not only the traditional Franciscan cross-stitched embroidery and the majolica, but also sculptures and paintings. Return to Florence in the evening.
