Leaving Florence, enjoy the 50 minute drive to the university town of Pisa where you will have a brief stop by the Field of Miracles for photographs and to marvel at the exterior of the Campanile, better known as the Leaning Tower.
This famous Bell Tower leans over 16 feet out of perpendicular! Efforts to stabilize the building are made constantly, together with a continued monitoring process of the structure.
You will also see Lungarno and Cavalieri Square.
After your tour of Pisa, your driver will take you to Carrara - the world of marble!
To introduce you to "the Carrara marble world", forget the nice Tuscany, with nice fields, nice villages... this is Carrara, a world apart. This is the real world, real life, where people have been strictly bounded to the mountains for over 2000 years.
They knew only marble (quarrying, transportation, processing) and this way of life has conditioned our existence, culture, art and food. We start with the visit of a marble quarry, because this is the beginning of everything and it helps tourists to better understand and appreciate our land. Do not forget that we are talking about the hugest marble basin of the world, the hugest and oldest quarrying area of the world.
Visit of a quarry: learn about the techniques and tools used to quarry marble from roman times until today.
From a panoramic terrace watch what happens in an active quarry.
Visit of an open cast quarry: in complete safety enter an active quarry to understand, from the quarrymen point of view, what working in a marble quarry means.
Visit of an underground quarry: this is amazing stuff!!
Then choose two of the following places to visit:
Visit of Colonnata: famous worldwide for its "Lardo". A piece of pig's fat, conserved for at least for 6 months in marble tubs; sea salt, spices and special herbs from these special mountains give it a wonderful flavour.
Visit of Carrara historic centre: a visit through three different part of Carrara:
the medieval one with its castle (XIV cent.), narrow streets, and Duomo (XI cent.);
the renaissance one: with Alberica square and decorated noblemen palaces;
the modern Carrara: the town built across XIX and XX century.
Visit of a sculpture atelier: to learn about the tools and techniques used by Michelangelo, Donatello and many other ancient and contemporary sculptors, to obtain a piece of art from a rough marble block.
Visit of a marble sawmill: to learn about the industrial use of the marble. Carrara, in fact, is the world's main centre for stone processing. Marbles and granites are processed and become floors, coverings, steps, stairs, tables, etc. etc.
