|PORTOFINO AND SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE|
Portofino is an unassuming fishing village turned into a Mecca for luxury yachts. But even if it is considered one of the world's most famous and exclusive resorts and has become a favorite of international celebrities, it still retains an atmosphere of bygone days: skinny buildings painted in dusky shades of peach, rose and lemon and with slender shutters, stand tall around the piazza.
Here it is possible to walk around in the small port just to look at the luxury boats and maybe meet movie stars, but it is also possible to walk up to the lighthouse. You will start the visit with the world famous Piazzetta, where VIPs and the inhabitants of the villas in the surrounding area meet to have an aperitivo.
But Portofino is not only the Piazzetta: a visit to the Brown Castle and a walk to St. George's Church and to the Lighthouse will not be missed. There is a footpath which goes from the harbor up to the headland: in five minutes you will reach the Church of San Giorgio, containing the relics of the dragon-slayer St. George, recalling the Age of the Crusades. The imposing San Giorgio Fortress (also called Castello Brown) was built later, in 1554, in a dominant position. The tour will continue, walking along the same path to the very top of the promontory, to Punto del Capo, where the faro (the lighthouse) rises. It is another great lookout point before going back to the center of Portofino. Don't forget shopping in the elegant boutiques. On the way back stop in Santa Margherita Ligure, another charming maritime village along the bay of Tigullio where you'll have the chance to admire the uniqueness of the Ligurian landscape that is strongly present in the art, culture, environment, cuisine and folklore of this village.
