PISA AND TUSCANY BEACH FIDE18

Pisa and Lucca

Another delightful itinerary is the one that goes through the Versilia Coast . You'll have the chance to visit the world famous Field of Miracles with the Leaning tower and nice villages like Viareggio , Lido di Camaiore, Marina di pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi where you can find the most famous beach resorts of Tuscany . Your driver will pick you up at your accommodation in Florence at the prearranged time and after 50 minutes drive through the Tuscan countryside you'll reach Pisa, one of the best known Tuscan cities. The town of Pisa is of Etruscan origin. In 179 B.C. it became a Roman colony and in 89 B.C. a Roman municipium. Pisa was an important naval base for the Romans. In the middle Ages it was an important port, just like Venice , Genoa and Amalfi. Each of these towns had both a merchant fleet and a navy, which controlled all the seas around Italy . Pisa reached its greatest peak of splendour in the XI and XII centuries when it expanded its power over the islands of Corsica , Sicily and Sardinia . In addition, it controlled the entire Tuscan coast from Portovenere to Civitavecchia . It's most celebrated attraction, the Leaning Tower , has become, along with the Coliseum, gondolas and spaghetti, a symbol for the entire Italian Republic. You can visit the " Field of Miracles " and see the Leaning Tower , the cathedral, the "Campo Santo" cemetery, the Baptistery, and the cathedral museum. A few years ago, after a long restoration, the tower was reopened and now you can go to the top to admire the view. The climb to the top is an experience in itself, as you can feel the "lean" in the structure while you wind your way to the peak. (Reservations can be made on-line: http://www.opapisa.it/boxoffice/index.jsp ). After Pisa you'll drive directly to the Versilia Coast and the first stop is Viareggio . Formed around the 12th Century, originally as a fishing village, today Viareggio , gem of Versilia is an important port, whose dockyards build very prestigious yachts. Along the promenade several are the boutiques, shops, cafés, discos, cinemas, art-galleries and obviously very good restaurants where taste several famous Viareggian fish dishes, as well the traditional Tuscan cuisine . You may prefer a pizza prepared in the traditional way or a terrific "spaghetti allo Scoglio" (spaghetti with seafood). Thanks to its numerous palaces in the Liberty Style this town, famous not only as a seaside resort, but also the floats parade held during Carnival time (February/March), acquires a special appeal. After that, driving a few minutes along the coast you'll reach Forte dei Marmi, seaside resort at mid distance between Marina di Massa and Viareggio , Forte dei Marmi is loved by italians and foreigners for its beaches, numerous restaurants and the nightlife. The Fort, built in 1788, is located in the main square and as the town is named after it, it has become its symbol. Shops and art galleries are open till late at night. The Wednesday morning market is popular with visitors all year round. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon.
